Fabric Shower Curtains

You may be wondering why and how there could possibly be more than one type of shower curtain. However, the truth is that there are a plethora of bathroom shower curtains available in today's bathroom accessories market. Shower curtains have had to evolve with new styles, trends, and patterns similarly to the way that many other home accents have had to develop in order to meet the needs and demands of consumers. Regardless of the type of shower curtain that best suits your style, you can be certain that it will function to protect your bathroom from a wave of water and serve to provide an element of safety within your space.

Fabric shower curtains represent one of the most popular types of shower curtains available today. They are available in a plethora of colors and patterns, which immensely expands your options and boasts superior versatility in terms of decorating possibilities. Further, fabric shower curtains can be preserved with the assistance of a shower curtain liner. Prolonging the life of a fabric shower curtain will enable you to prevent water from spilling out onto your bathroom floor as well as reduce the amount of overspray that escapes to the rest of your bathroom. Because they are naturally heavier than other shower curtains, fabric shower curtains offer an element of durability that is unparalleled.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Why is the fabric in shower curtains less absorbent to water? What material is added?

    • ANSWER:
Usually, cloth liners are made from fibers that are in and of themselves less water absorbent (such as nylon) OR they are made from a single monolithic piece of non-absorbent material and textured to look like cloth (such as sheet vinyl).

As mentioned above, water proofing treatments can be also be added to absorbent fibers to help them repel water, either before the thread is woven into cloth (better results) or after the fact.

  2. QUESTION:
Can you put shower curtains in the washing machine? (not the liner but the outside fabric curtain)?
    And what about the dryer?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, you can wash in warm water (unless it's a dark, then use a cold wash)
To dry, just hang on the rod and leave it there. It will dry VERY fast and you will not need to iron.

  3. QUESTION:
What kind of stitching should I use to applique fabric butterflies to my fabric shower curtain?
I have a fabric shower curtain that I would like to attach cotton fabric butterflies to. What is the best way to go about this.

  4. QUESTION:
Do you have to use a vinyl liner with a fabric shower curtain?
I bought a fabric shower curtain. It's really cute and I want to keep it. Do I need to use a vinyl liner underneath so it doesn't get nasty and then just throw the vinyl liner away?

    • ANSWER:
if you do not use the liner that is underneath it will get disgusting... plus cloth doesn't keep out water well... just when you put the cloth one on the hooks put the vinyl one on too! (when you shower put the vinyl part inside the tub and the cloth outside of the tub!)

  5. QUESTION:
how would i get red lipstick out of a fabric shower curtain?
how would i get red lipstick out of a fabric shower curtain? Fast answers please.

    • ANSWER:
I hope we're talking about a small spot on the shower curtain, and not something like "my 3 year old just got into my lipstick and drew a lovely picture on my shower curtain".

You should try some Dawn dishwashing liquid (not the kind for your dishwasher...that has bleach in it).
Soak the spot it in warm sudsy water.
Start scrubbing (I use a fingernail brush on my clothes) from the BACK of the fabric. If you start from the front of the fabric you will push the stain into the shower curtain. And, if the scrubbing does any damage to the shower curtain it won't be as noticeable.

If this doesn't work go to the hardware store and get some "Gunk". It's a liquid cleaner that's used to remove grease and that sticky residue left behind by tape and price tags on products. I haven't purchased any for a couple years (it lasts forever, 'cause you only us a little bit at a time) but I think it's under .

      Hope this helps.

  6. QUESTION:
Are fabric shower curtain liners that claim to be mildew resistant really effective at preventing mildew?
I usually buy vinyl shower cutain liners for less than at Target, then just throw them away when they develop lots of mildew. I live in an apartment that has no exhaust fan in the bathroom, so mildew is practically unavoidable. Will it be worth it to spend on one of the fabric, mildew resistant liners? I imagine that I could put the fabric kind in the washing machine if it begins to develop mold instead of throwing it away, correct?

    • ANSWER:
Why throw vinyl away, stick them in washer with cup of chlorx or chlorine and they come out clean and mildew clean. Do it all the time.

  7. QUESTION:
Can you scotch guard a fabric shower liner?
I bought 10 expensive fabric shower curtain liners (I run an inn) and after washing them, they don't seem to be waterproof anymore. They claimed you can wash and wash them over and over again (with bleach). Has anyone ever scotch guarded a fabric shower liner? And yes, I have tried the plastic liners. For an inn they seem cheap and have to be replaced too many times. Too much plastic in the garbage and they get icky too quickly. And they don't wash well.

    • ANSWER:
Did you wash them with a liquid detergent or add fabric softener? That may have killed the durable water repelling treatment of these. You can try rewashing one several times with plain powdered detergent, no fabric softener, and see if that helps -- it may.

There are also some wash-in treatments for outdoor goods that may help, like Nikwax CottonProof or Down Proof.

Personally, I detest most shower curtains -- the fashionable ones are too light weight, and they attempt to wrap themselves around your legs while you're showering The only ones I do like are the old cotton canvas ones -- but they need to be washed weekly or so.

  8. QUESTION:
how high to hang a fabric shower curtain....?
Small-very small bathroom. the fabric is a stripe (verticle) and one of the colours is the wall colour.
up to the ceiling or not and why, please

    • ANSWER:
it is a person's own taste but if it is to look larger then it maybe should ne hung up to the ceiling

  9. QUESTION:
How do I get a mildew stain off of my fabric shower curtain?
My husband always throws his towel over the curtain rod after he dries off. Now there is a mildew spot where his towel hangs.

    • ANSWER:
they tell you not to do this, but it works. Spray the shower curtain with Tilex, rub it in and wash in hot water with the regular amount of detergent for a full load, but only put in the shower curtain.

  10. QUESTION:
How do you keep mold from forming on a fabric shower curtain liner?
They all say they are mold-proof, but after a while there's no stopping it. I put the liner into the wash and it cleans it really well, but the mold inevitably comes back. It's usually down where the liner clings to the tub and is probably because it can't dry out well there, but I can't figure out how to solve that issue.

Is there something with which you can clean the liner or something to put on the liner to keep mold from growing?
FYI: I do keep the liner fully extended, but I wonder if that's part of the problem because then the whole thing just clings to the wet tub and never dries well. I like the idea of pulling the liner outside the tub, but how do you keep it from dripping (even after shaking the excess water out)?

    • ANSWER:
Personally I dont' have the patience to spray Tilex on it, which you're supposed to do all the time.

I just throw it in the wash in hot water and use bleach. Works like a charm.

  11. QUESTION:
How do I remove Mold and Mildew from my fabric shower curtain?
I have washed it in hot water with bleach and with vinegar to no avail.

    • ANSWER:
      Ammonia with baking soda

  12. QUESTION:
If I was going to have my mom make a fabric shower curtain how many yards of fabric would I need?
also are there paterns for that or is she just gonna have to wing it?

    • ANSWER:
The yards of fabric you need would depend on what you wanted it to look like (and the width of the fabric). Sometimes you can find patterns in store, specifically if you wanted a frilly design or something more complicated.

A simple shower curtain would be easy to sew because it's basically a long, lined rectangle. Measure how long you'd need it to be (from floor to curtain rod) and write that down. The measure how wide you want it to be (wall to wall). Write that down and then add several inches to the number (the curtain wont be tight, it'll have extra fabric). About 20 extra inches would be enough.

These number are the final measurements of the curtain, but you'll need more fabric than that for seam allowances, and possibly a pocket for a rod at the top (you might just use rings to hang it, I don't know what your doing here).

      For example.
If you wrote down that the final curtain needs to be 72+20 in. wide x 84 in. long, and your fabric is 36 inches wide, then you'd need about 3 sections to go across and about 3 yards to get to the floor. Multiply these and you'd need about 9 yards of fabric, just for a simple flat curtain.

By the way, if the fabric costs per yard, then this will wind up costing about . It would be cheaper to go to wal-mart and buy a shower curtain for already made.

      addition:
I didn't even mention the lining. The measurements would be the same as for the regular curtain, so that's about another 9 yards, and another .

  13. QUESTION:
Is it possible to make a fabric shower curtain out of a bed sheet?

    • ANSWER:
Sure. I actually used cloth tablecloths for my shower curtain because they are a color and pattern I like.

I didn't do any sewing either; I just got those curtain hangers that have a clip at the bottom and a ring on top - get the right diameter to go over your shower curtain bar. I always use a shower curtain liner. You can get plain ones pretty cheaply at stores like Target or Home Depot. Otherwise, you can get fancier ones at places like Linens n Things, Macy's, etc.

  14. QUESTION:
Where's a good place to get a NICE fabric looking shower curtain for around ?
I've been to some places and it seems like everywhere, the shower curtains are UGLY....cmon now!

    • ANSWER:
Linen's and Things, Bed,Bath and Beyond, J.C. Penney's catalog, Sears catalog or make it yourself if you can sew a straight seam. Cut 2, 5 foot panels of a fabric you like and sew together along the side. Hem the bottom and 2 sides and along the top make a deep hem with iron on interfacing inside. Either put grommets along the top for the curtain rings or buy the type of curtain rings that just clip on.

  15. QUESTION:
Is it ok to use a fabric shower curtain as a living room curtain?

    • ANSWER:
YES, they make excellent curtains and are less expensive and wash like a dream, the only drawback is most are 5 feet long so on windows that are huge they will be too short.

  17. QUESTION:
Can a Fabric Shower Curtain Liner be used as a standalone shower curtain? Target is too confusing!?

    • ANSWER:
Yes you can they are treated with a scotch guard water replant. My son left his soaking in a bathtub full of water for I don't know how long and it got a little stain on it. I wish I would have left it alone because after I washed it the water replant is gone and now it gets moldy and I have to wash it frequently. But yes you can use them they are coated from the factory.

  21. QUESTION:
I made a shower curtain, what can I use to treat the polyester fabric to make it mildew/mold resistant?
Is there something I can spray on it that will not damage the fabric? I know you can buy shower curtains that are treated to be mold/mildew resistant, and if anyone knows what they use to treat them, I would like to know. Thanks for your knowledge!

    • ANSWER:
A fabric shower curtain will dry naturally, and grow less mold/mildew than a plastic or vinyl one.

Close the curtain after each shower, letting it dry thoroughly. You might throw it in the washing machine a few times a year, but shouldn't have trouble otherwise.

Most fabric curtains sold in stores are fine to use alone (without a plastic liner). They will keep in water unless you turn the sprayer right at the fabric.

The treated ones you mention are all plastic or vinyl. They are commonly used in hotels, where the guests can't be reminded to close the curtain so that all the moisture can drain away and air-dry.

  22. QUESTION:
Are there any tandem shower curtain rings that are not just plain jane plastic?
The tandem shower rings work nicely with fabric shower curtains and then a plastic liner instead of using two rods. After searching the internet, all I can find are plain jane plastic! Sure hope someone has a source.

    • ANSWER:
get some plastic ones and buy a can of textured spray paint and paint them

  23. QUESTION:
fabric shower curtain vs. fabric shower liner?
what is the difference? does a fabric shower liner work the same as a vinyl shower liner? if i have a fabric shower liner do i have to use a vinyl one? i just bought one at target and the packaging says "fabric shower curtain liner" "mild resistant, rust resistant, metal grommets". the tag on the liner itself just says "shower curtain 100% polyester"

so can i use it as a liner like i would with a vinyl liner is it just a shower curtain used for decorative purposes?

    thanks!!

    • ANSWER:
You use the fabric liner just as you would the plastic liner. You don't need both. Fabric is just classier than the plastic.

The fabric liner is just what it says. A liner. It helps keep water off your floor just as the plastic one does. The shower curtain is actually the decorative part. Hang your liner so it falls in the tub and the curtain so it falls outside the tub.

  24. QUESTION:
Can I wash my shower curtains in the clothes washer? The cheap plastic shower curtains?
These are the really cheap, 10 dollar off-white plastic shower curtains. They are not fabric. I live in an apartment, so i can't just hose them down outside like some people.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, you can wash a plastic shower curtain in the clothes washer. I do it all the time.

Wash on the Cold or Warm setting and include some towels to scrub the shower curtain clean. I use regular laundry detergent, and add a scoop of Oxi Clean™ to get rid of any mold and mildew.

After washing, hang the curtain back up, straight from the washer. Do not machine dry a plastic shower curtain -- it will melt in a dryer.

Pull the wrinkles out the best you can when hanging. The rest of the wrinkles will relax over time.

  25. QUESTION:
What kind of fabric to use when making a shower curtain?
I am pondering the idea of making a shower curtain. Does anyone know what is the best type of fabric to use for this?

    • ANSWER:
If you are talking about the plastic part, I would just buy a liner, for about .99 at Wal Mart. Then you can use any kind of fabric you like for the decorative part. A pair of twin flat sheets work great. You can use one of those spring type rods, that stay up by themselves. Run the top part of the sheet, (it is just a pocket) over the rod. Then, create some tie backs, and there you go. Put the rod with the sheet as high as you can. so the length will be right.
Sheets make great curtains for anyplace in your home!

  26. QUESTION:
Looking for a decorative way to hang cloth shower curtains...?
When we bought our house the previous owner had two standard fabric shower curtains, one at each end of the rod (and outside the vinyl liner), that were folded in such a way that there were three grommets on each hook.
I was not able to get a good look at the method she had used before my wife had the curtains down and in the wash, but she (my wife) has been expecting me to replicate the pleats for the past three years. I may have gotten close, but not the same.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you!
Have spen hours searching, most of the results either show me how to put the curtain on the rod, or are trying to sell me shower curtains or hooks.

Unfortunately the prev owner passed before that year was out. so asking her is right out.

    • ANSWER:
I would call the previous owner if possible. She would be thrilled to know you liked them that much. Or look through HGTV.com shows, searching "curtains". Good Luck

  27. QUESTION:
How often do you buy new shower curtain?

    • ANSWER:
you should be able to wash it on gentle cycle so not to lose any sequins. i would hang it out to dry though again because of the sequins

  28. QUESTION:
How do I attach appliques to a sheer shower curtain?
I have been looking for a dragonfly theme shower curtain, but nothing suits me. My newest bright idea is to purchase a sheer fabric shower curtain and attach appliques of my own design. Thinking that iron-on process would melt curtain. HELP

    • ANSWER:
Polyester sheer curtains will NOT melt if you iron them. How else do they sew hems if they do not iron the hems into place, then sew them???

Just buy a iron on applique and press with the iron on the sheer or sew the appliques on with the sewing machine.

I wouldn't use glue, as sheer curtains are see-through, so your going to see the glue on the other side of the curtain.

Either iron on, or sew on neatly. (Sewing on would be the most lasting)

  29. QUESTION:
Who Creates Standards For Shower Curtains?
I know this may sound like a weird question, but who creates standards for shower curtains? I just bought a new fabric curtain and while I wasn't surprised that the number of holes matched the number of rings, it did make me wonder...All sorts of different companies create curtains - is there a body that decides that it should have 12 holes in it for a 70" wide curtain?

Just a random question I thought I would ask. I know how important standards are in the computer science field, but I never really considered that there are probably more standards than anyone can imagine.

  31. QUESTION:
Can I use Rit dye to dye my pink shower curtain?
I have a solid hot pink fabric shower curtain, and I am wondering if I can dye it black with Rit dye. I have looked online and I can't figure out if you can only dye light colored things.

Will black dye turn my hot pink shower curtain black??

    Thanks :D

    • ANSWER:
Chances are your curtain is polyester, which will only dye at home with iDye poly; the other problems are that Rit isn't a particularly good dye, and black is a particularly difficult color to dye.

My suggestion is just buy a black shower curtain.

Normally, you'd strip out the color before re-dyeing.

Oh, the other problem with this project: even if your curtain fabric is cotton, chances are that it was sewn with polyester thread. So dyeing it black will give you a (probably greyish-black) black shower curtain with hot pink stitching.

Anything can be used for anything in home decorating if it looks good to you and you have the savvy to carry it off.

What has happened to fabrics lately? Know where I can find some pretty and sophisticated shower curtains?
I've been shopping for both window treatments and shower curtains lately....what has happened? I'm not normally that picky of a person, but it's hard to believe I can't find a pretty floral print - but I COULD buy fuzzy, hot pink drapes with beads down the middle. I don't get it.

    • ANSWER:
Linens 'n Things or Bed Bath & Beyond have rather boring fabrics, but go to Stein Mart for really nice ones.

  44. QUESTION:
How much fabric will I need to use to make a shower curtain?

it will be for a tub shower.

    • ANSWER:
Will the curtain be needed in a stall shower or in a tub shower?

Both have different widths. The best method is to measure the area (or measure a shower curtain you already have and use that as a pattern.)

Most bolts of fabric will be sold in widths of 45" or 60".

Fabric is sold by the yard.

  45. QUESTION:
I have purchased a shower liner and a fabric outside curtain. What do I need for a rod and hooks?

    • ANSWER:
You can use one rod and hooks for both, or use two seperate rods, using the one for the cloth curtain a little higher so the other rod doesn't show, that way if you only want to pull the liner closed, the other one can stay put.

  47. QUESTION:
    Find me a shower curtain!?
My bathroom is tiled floor to ceiling in medium blue tile.

I like the break up the blue a little bit- the past I've had sheer shower curtains with blue designs. Lately I've been thinking of getting a white fabric shower curtain with some detailing, but I can't find one I like.

I'd appreciate links to any suggestions, not just "Try Target!"

    • ANSWER:
How about making one of your own and putting the plastic liner underneath. You can put up another pole. Either make one or a queen size flat sheet if you find one you like. You don't have to stick to what's in stores or online. Hope you find what you want. Roxanne

  48. QUESTION:
What kind of "shower curtain" is this? And where can I find it?
Whenever I view model apartments, they have some sort of wide, maybe 2 ft. vertical valance that is hanging from the rod over a garden tub. There are no curtains attached to it. Some of the places I look at has it alone, others which have curtains under it. It appears to be a stand-alone type of curtain. The only thing that comes remotely close are the fabric shower curtains that have a smaller attached valance. That is NOT what this is. Now that I am moving into one of these apartments with a garden tub, I want a curtain thing just like that. However, I can't find it anywhere, even at places like Bed, Bath and Beyond. If I knew what it was called, maybe I could search for it that way. Even the Property Managers don't know, since it was done by a professional decorator years before.

    • ANSWER:
I work at bed bath and beyond. I believe what you are looking for is called a shower valance. Often times a curtain does come with them or they can be bought alone. If a curtain does come with it there is usually a tie back for the curtain for when you are taking a bath.

  49. QUESTION:
What is your opinion on the hookless shower curtain?
I needed a new shower curtain, so I went to walmart to check them out. There was a new hookless shower curtain made of fabric which states on the package that there is no need for a liner. I was wondering if anyone has one and if so, what are your opinions on it? Do they work well and are they really water proof? thanks

    • ANSWER:
I have one that I purchased at Walmart and I love it. They are waterproof. It is nice to not have plastic against you as you shower so I recommend them.

OR you can do a dark chocolate which i like better because its not that brown on the curtain.
