Plastic Shower Curtains

Best time to clean your bathroom – take advantage of that fresh out of the shower dew that’s just settled all over your bathroom. No need to fill a bucket full of water, just take a paper towel and wipe off the loosened dirt.

Cleaning bathroom tile and grout – one of the hardest things to clean in any bathroom is tile and that dirty grout that over time looks more and more gross.

To clean ceramic tile: mix 1 part vinegar with 4 parts water, or, make a solution of water conditioner and water. Wipe down with a soft cloth. Rinse tile thoroughly. Buff with a soft dry cloth.

To clean bathroom grout: add 3/4 cup chlorine bleach to 1 gallon of water. Put on rubber gloves and using a toothbrush, wash grout with bleach solution. Rinse grout well.

Cleaning bathroom floor – a fast way to clean your bathroom floor is to apply a spray disinfectant to the floor and wipe off with paper towels or a clean cloth.

How to clean a clogged showerhead – to get rid of accumulated mineral deposits on a showerhead, remove the showerhead and take it apart. Soak the pieces in a bowl of vinegar. Take a toothbrush and clean out remaining sediment. Replace showerhead.

Cleaning toilet bowl ring – get rid of that dirty ring around the toilet by pouring some chlorine bleach into the toilet bowl and letting it sit for a few minutes. Flush to rinse. This method rivals the best commercial toilet bowl cleaner.

Cleaning a fiberglass bath tub – fiberglass tubs can be a little harder to clean than other types. A water conditioner like Calgon works well for these types of tubs.

Clean dull shower door – clean dull shower doors with a cloth saturated with distilled white vinegar or water softener. Buff dry with a clean cloth.

Cleaning plastic shower curtains – machine wash plastic curtains in warm water with a water conditioner like Calgon. Hang dry. For mildewed curtains add 3/4 cup chlorine bleach to wash cycle.

Removing nonskid rubber tub decals – remove these sticky decals with a straightedge razor (in a holder) that has been dipped in soapy water. Remove remaining residue with nail polish remover.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can I wash my shower curtains in the clothes washer? The cheap plastic shower curtains?
These are the really cheap, 10 dollar off-white plastic shower curtains. They are not fabric. I live in an apartment, so i can't just hose them down outside like some people.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, you can wash a plastic shower curtain in the clothes washer. I do it all the time.

Wash on the Cold or Warm setting and include some towels to scrub the shower curtain clean. I use regular laundry detergent, and add a scoop of Oxi Clean™ to get rid of any mold and mildew.

After washing, hang the curtain back up, straight from the washer. Do not machine dry a plastic shower curtain -- it will melt in a dryer.

Pull the wrinkles out the best you can when hanging. The rest of the wrinkles will relax over time.

  3. QUESTION:
Is it true plastic shower curtains can change hormones and harm infants?
I found this "Going Green: Ditch your plastic shower curtains and get ones made out of cotton! The plastic has chemicals that can alter your hormones or harm infants! And being a mutant is not nearly as cool as movies like "X-Men" would have you believe…"

Is it true? I hope not....

    • ANSWER:
Well seeing as how I've always used plasic shower curtains (as I'm sure you'll find with most people) and myself and my daugther are both normal (though I did just grow a third leg recently) I think it's safe to assume that's a crock of BS.

Nowadays everything is bad for you. I'm so sick of hearing about it. Remember the rumor about cell phones causing cancer. That was a crock too. All I know is many things we as Americans have done for years now all of the sudden people say it's bad for you. I'm sure some of the things are bad for you. But in an industry where the drug companies will sell you a pill for everything (take restless leg syndrome) when I was young they called it "oh my leg fell asleep" now we need a pill for that which has worst side effects. Ohh but we have a pill for those side effects too.

And with lawyers itching to sue every company they can it's no wonder everything is so bad for us all of the sudden.

Now we have this whole going green campain, some is good, and some is a bunch of BS. The same company that produces going green surface cleaner (can't remember if it was proctor and gamble or not) is the same company that everytime I walk down the isle in my grocery store I'm literally tripping over boxes of disposable swiffer things, and disposable toilet bowl scrubbers replacement heads. How are we going green with one product but they same company sells another ridiculous disposable piece of nonsense.

My toilet bowl scrubber works just fine and I don't have to buy another head every week. Swiffer? I can sweep and mop and not have to buy a new broom or mop everyweek.

      Ahh going green going sphleen.

Now ask me again if I think these curtains are harmful to kids? Did your parents use plastic or cotton?

  4. QUESTION:
Can you put plastic shower curtains in the washing machine?
I have these great plastic shower curtains...they cost less than 5. I was wondering if it is okay to put them in the washing machine? They are in great condition(no tears)...there is now mildew growing on it. Hate to just throw them out especially if they can be washed. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Use Tilex on them. Spray it on, wait a few minutes, and rinse it off with the shower. The agitation of the washing machine will likely damage them.

  5. QUESTION:
Are there any alternatives to having plastic shower curtains?
Where can they be purchased? (Or how can they be made?) What was used before plastics were invented? Can you give references or websites?

    • ANSWER:
Vinyl accordion doors that hang from a bar can be attractive. You've gotten lots of great input from these answers. There are all kinds of Ideas in the bath section of most large home improvement chains. Look in their books for the thing that fits you best.

  6. QUESTION:
Is it safe to put plastic shower curtains in the washer?
Someone told me that it would rip but I don't know how else to clean it!

    • ANSWER:
yes, just use 2 white towels and bleach on GENTLE and warm water

UNLESS it's one of those THIN, CHEAP, dollar store typed ones, (from experience..lol)
then I wouldn't go about it this way, I'd fill my tub and put warm water and bleach in it and agitate it myself.

  7. QUESTION:
    Are plastic shower curtains recyclable?
We bought a new plastic shower curtain kind of spur of the moment before we had visitors to our house last year. It was supposed to be mildew/mold resistant, but has failed that test and I absolutely abhor the color of it. I was wondering if shower curtains can be recycled at my local facility?

    • ANSWER:
where i live yes, but if its not, then they will just throw it away for you, so dont worry, go green!
p.s.- im in high school and abhor was my vocabulary word this week *random thought

  8. QUESTION:
Is there a significant difference in clingyness between plastic and textile shower curtains?
I was on the verge of purchasing an expensive shower screen for my bath when I discovered shower curtains not only come in the cheap plastic variety that clings when you shower but also in a rather nice textile variety.. Although textile costs more than plastic it is much cheaper than a glass door. Before I make my decision I need to hear from anyone who knows if textile is just as horrible and clingy or if it's generally better weighted and stays put while you shower? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Yes, spend more money on the textile curtains. The cheap ones will mildew faster as well.

  9. QUESTION:
    Plastic shower curtains & washing????
How do i wash plastic shower curtains? Its a thick kind of plastic..but is it possible to wash them in the machine or should i just toss em out?

    • ANSWER:
Yes you can wash your shower curtain in the washing machine.

Chlorine bleach will turn some plastic yellow.

Wash it with a few towels to buff the soap scum off it.

Dry it in the dryer only a few minutes to get the wrinkles out and make it pliable. Hang it back up immediately.

  10. QUESTION:
can I wash & dry plastic shower curtains in washer & dryer?

    • ANSWER:
Yes ,put a couple towels in with the curtain for friction. I shake the excess water out put it in the dryer with dry towels. I allow it to just get warm (1 Minute or so) so the wrinkles fall out as it gets flexible and the hang it back up.

  11. QUESTION:
How to get rid of plastic smell from new shower curtain liner?
A week ago I got a new plastic shower curtain liner and hung it up. It gave off a strong plastic smell (I don't know how else to describe it), but that wasn't unexpected for a new plastic curtain. But, it is still giving off that strong plastic odor seven days later.

What can I do to get rid of the plastic odor?

    • ANSWER:
      You can't unfortunately.

These types of plastic shower curtains are made from vinyl (PVC, essentially) which in its pure state is a very stiff, rigid plastic. In order to make the material softer, so that it moves like a normal curtain, the vinyl incorporates a "plasticiser" which is a liquid that sits between the plastic molecules thereby creating a looser, softer stucture.

Vinyl itself has no odour, what you can smell is the plasticiser, and since it will always be present in the vinyl there is nothing much you can do about it. Generally speaking, lower cost vinyls tend to incorporate lower priced (and more unpleasant smelling) plasticisers.

  12. QUESTION:
My new plastic shower curtain has an awful plasticy smell to it, how do I get rid of this smell?
It's a regular clear plastic shower curtain from linens and things, which has an awful smell to it. what should i do to diminsh this smell? will this smell go away with time?

    • ANSWER:
I love that smell!! It smells like a beach ball and is one of my favorite smells from childhood! Ahh the memories....anyway, the smell will diminish on it's own after you use the shower a few times. Give it a few days.

  13. QUESTION:
How do you clean a plastic shower curtain?
I have a clear plastic shower curtain, with a design, and the whole bottom of it has for some reason turned pink. I keep my shower clean, and I can't seem to figure out why it's turned pink, and I don't know how to get it out.

    • ANSWER:
      1. Take your shower curtain off the rod. This is easily done by unhooking the fasteners.

      2. Put the shower curtain in your washer with a few towels that need washing and add the usual detergent.

      3. Use hot water and the usual cycle for washing your towels and shower curtain.

      4. Do not use fabric softeners. These should not be used on towels anyway since they affect absorbency.

      5. Shake or drip dry your shower curtain.

      6. Rehang your sparkling clean shower curtain.

7 After you shower leave your shower curtain open (not bunched up) so that it may dry without accumulating mold or mildew.

It's best to compact the shower curtain a little by opening both ends and also moving the rings midway toward each end toward the center. This distributes gentle bends across the shower curtain rather than trapping water by crumpling or folding it over on itself. Not only will the curtain still be fully exposed to air, but air will be free to slowly circulate around it from the sides and overhead to more rapidly dry the entire interior of the shower area. This works even better if you leave the bathroom door open a little after a shower.

you could also try the air-it-out shower hook. it sticks to the side wall and you drape the curtain over, so it lets air in and the bottom of the curtain doesnt get moldy.
If you want to add a little bleach to the wash, you can do so but make sure the other things you put in with the shower curtain can take the bleach.
White vinegar can be used as an alternative to bleach. It will kill mold and will be easier on those with chemical sensitivities.
If you put your shower curtain in the wash once a month you will avoid that nasty moldy build-up.
You can put your shower curtain in the dryer as long as you are very careful not to leave it in for more than a minute or two.
You may also wash your plastic shower curtain alone, without the towels if you'd like. It should not melt or warp on normal washing machine settings.
Being little more than heavy-duty trash bags, basic shower-curtain liners can be bought online for less than two dollars each. (Buy them several at a time or with other items to save on shipping.) You could just use them, preferably with S-shaped metal hooks rather than snap-closed metal rings for easy changing and optionally with a decorative outer curtain that will stay relatively dry and mold-free, and throw them away every month or so when they start to get moldy. This is very convenient and consumes a negligible amount of resources. Probably as much as a few plastic bottles, and less than heating the water in which to not-very-effectively wash a big floppy curtain that tends to crumple and "protect" itself from soapy water much as it has protected your floor.

  14. QUESTION:
How to clean ickiness off a plastic shower curtain?
I am having a plumbing problem that means that my bathtub does not drain for a few hours after a shower. As a result, the bottom of my plastic shower curtain liner has been sitting in shower water, and it is becoming discolored. I'm wondering how I can clean it to get rid of the discoloration. The curtain is clear. Thanks!
The reason it's worth my trouble: It has a design on it that shows through my outer cloth shower curtain in a nice silhouetted way. I bought it at a specialty shop in Boston and haven't seen another like it.

    • ANSWER:
How about an ammonia spray that you can coat the curtain with or something to put in the draining water. Might be a job for *yikes* a mild bleach solution in the draining water.

Also, i've actually washed a plastic shower curtain in the washing machine!

How much vinegar to clean mold off plastic shower curtain?
I have a vinyl shower curtain with red mold on the bottom. I've read a few tips, including putting it in the washing machine with some vinegar and detergent. How much vinegar should I use?

    • ANSWER:
Yes you can put it in the washer your normal detergent on HOT with 1/2 cup bleach or 1/2 cup vinegar. Let it soak a good hour or more.

Then.....Put it in the dryer with some old towels for about 5 minutes. This is so it won't be a cumbersome dripping mess. It will also soften the vinyl a bit so it won;t be wrinkly. Hang it back up to dry.

Pink mold is a respiratory mold called Serratia Marcescens. It feeds off soap scum and other bath proiducts like conditioner. http://www.blackmoldremovalhowto.com/pink-mold-serratia-marcescens

In the future ..Have a spray bottle of straight white vinegar in the bathroom and spray the curtian and tub daily with it after showers. The vinegar eats soap scum and mineral deposits. It only smells untill it dries.

This mold is airborne. It is found in the elderly and young children with respritory problems. It can even be someone living next door.

I just bought a pretty new shower curtain, but the creases from packaging make it look awful. Is there any way to remove them?
I've had the same plastic shower curtain hanging for over a year now and its' creases never came out, not really. I could (very carefully) try the hair dryer trick, though.
Nothing is really working. I tried the hair dryer trick, it didn't do a thing. The hot water helped a little, but now it's very wrinkly from sitting in the water. I'll keep trying...

what is the best way to clean a plastic shower curtain?
i don't want to buy a new one yet. what kind of soap? recommended cleaning product(s)? clean it on a table, the floor, or outside? my shower curtain has spots from hard water, soap, and something orange (mildew? eww).
surely i can't put a plastic curtain in the washing machine...?

    • ANSWER:
      Shower Curtain Wash recipe

      1/2 cup detergent
      1/2 cup baking soda

Fill the washing machine with warm water and add 2 large bath towels. Add detergent and baking soda. Put the shower curtain into the washing machine. Run through the entire wash cycle; however, add 1 cup vinegar to the rinse water. Do not spin dry or wash vinegar out. This method will not work without the bath towels. Hang the shower curtain immediately. Wrinkles will disappear after the curtain has thoroughly dried.

  28. QUESTION:
Can machine-washing your shower curtains ruin them?
I was cleaning my bathroom and my shower curtain (plastic with some strips of color on it) was getting dirty.. I didn't know how to wash it, so I did what any sensible man would do. I just threw it in the washing machine. When I got it out it had lost a ton of it's color! There was still color but it looks like some of it came off. Am I not supposed to wash plastic shower curtains? Or is it just the shower curtain I had bought?

    • ANSWER:
Shower curtains were not meant to be put in a washing machine, and once they get too old that you cannot use a simple cleaner to wipe the soap scum/mold, it become useless (the chemicals to protect the curtains wear off). Throw the shower curtains away and buy new ones. It's not worth it to bring more mold into the bathroom.

  29. QUESTION:
What is a good way to recycle my plastic shower curtain?
Its an okay shower cutain besides the small minute tears by the magnets on the bottom, its molding easily & I don't want to just throw it away b/c I don't even know if it can be recycled at the Recycling Centers...

Anybody got any ideas on what I can do with it?

    ~M~

    • ANSWER:
Take it to a community or county recycling event.

  30. QUESTION:
How can one remove orange build up on a plastic shower curtain?
I have already tried washing it with once with bleach, and once with vinegar and baking soda together. It's worked fairly well, the top of the curtain looks new, but he bottom still has a fairly strong orange tint. It has lightened a good bit, and it feels as if the soap scum has mostly come off.

    • ANSWER:
The only thing left is to soak it in strong bleach water for some time (overnight), but the fact is that it is probably deep in the plastic and it would be best to replace it.

  31. QUESTION:
Is there an easy method for washing a plastic shower curtain liner?
Can I wash it in the wash machine with a little bit of bleach?
The reason why I don't want to buy a new one is new plastic smell gives me migraines.

Plus plastic isn't recyclable and it's wasteful and harmful to the environment to keep throwing these away.

    • ANSWER:
If the liner is a thicker one you can wash it in the washer but NOT in cold water. You must use warm water. I tried the cold once and the liner shredded in the washer. You can put some washing powder and a little bleach with the liner and it should be fine.

  32. QUESTION:
Can anyone recommend a good online store to buy funny/cute/neat shower curtains?

  33. QUESTION:
Is it OK to put a plastic shower curtain in the washer?
I guess no dryer needed for that? And same detergent we use for other clothes? Thanks..

    • ANSWER:
Yes, but if you have hard water stains, be sure to put some white vinegar in the rinse cycle. I usually use my regular detergent, some 20 Mule Team Borax to loosen soap scum and then the vinegar to release the minerals left by the water that the soap scum clings to. By so doing, you actually will notice that the shower curtain stays cleaner longer between washings, too.

Another hint, spray the curtain occasionally after you take a shower with vinegar to break down the mineral deposits.

Also, if you let the curtain go through the spin cycle, it may come out all wrinkled. For less wrinkling in the wash process, use warm water. Even so, mine still comes out with creases so I hang it back up and hit it with my 1500 watt blow dryer at a distance pulling downward to ease out the wrinkles.

      Looks great every time!

I KNOW what PLASTIC is supposed to smell like--I have dealt with pastic things all my LIFE!
I am talking about a REALLY STRONG and UNNATURAL (even for plastic) SMELL!
Do you REALLY think that I don't know what plastic smells like?!!
    Shayna barby,
Why have I asked the same question?
If you figure out how this forum works/doesn't, you will understand.
The people only answer the questions they SEE. After one hour, the question disappears from what people initially see and they don't know it is there (unless they specifically search for it).
So, I have to post it several times, in different sections, to get some answers.
Since SO FEW PEOPLE can actually ANSWER the question--LIKE YOU--I have to skim through SO MANY STUPID answers before I get one that really helps.
THAT IS WHY. What is wrong with YOU??!!!

    • ANSWER:
I've noticed they smell like that these days. It is horrible. Last time I got a new one I sprayed some chemical free lavender cleaner all over it and faded out the smell a little bit.

    • ANSWER:
1 Set your washing machine on a gentle cycle. Allow the washer drum to begin to fill with water.
2 Pour the appropriate amount of laundry detergent into the water. Add 1/2 cup of baking soda and allow the drum to continue to fill with water.
3 Submerge the moldy shower curtain and two to three bath towels into the water. The bath towels will help prevent the shower curtain from crinkling and sticking to itself.
4 Close the lid and allow the washing machine to run.
5 Pour 1/2 cup of white vinegar into the washer drum while it is preparing for the rinse cycle. Close the lid and allow the washing machine to complete the cycle.
6 Remove the shower curtain from the washer. Hang it in an area where it can drip dry out of direct sunlight.

  44. QUESTION:
How do I get the FOLDS and WRINKLES out of a NEW Plastic shower curtain?
I ran the HOT WATER and shut the door for 45.minutes I've also TRIED too iron it,Using a towel on top of it! I STILL can't get them out! Help please! Anyone know a neat trick for this??

    • ANSWER:
Aim a hot blow dryer at the folds and wrinkles. The heat from the hair dryer should soften the plastic enough to smooth the wrinkles. I did this with a vinyl rain slicker that had been tightly packed in a box for a couple of years and it did the job pretty well.

  46. QUESTION:
I'm looking for a good way to clean a plastic shower curtain (not in the washing machine.)?

    • ANSWER:
No, not the washing machine. Definitely leave it hanging. I just climb right into the shower and spray it down with Lysol Mildew Remover with bleach, then rinse it off and it comes out fine. That both cleans it up and leaves it looking fresh and white again. But face reality, those cheap plastic shower liners are really only made to last for a year or two. After a couple of years, just throw it away and replace it.

--it's difficult to scrub hanging up
--my wife, if I can remember correctly--& I may be wrong, threw it in the laundry machine on cold with detergent, and hung it back up wet.
    Help! please!

put it in the washing machine on cold if it is the liner curtain- use a ph neutral detergent so as not to make the plastic brittle (woolite)

if you do not have woolite, then use one cup vinegar, and about 1/4 of the recommended amount of laundry detergent.

How can you keep a plastic shower curtain from mildewing?

    • ANSWER:
i like to wash it when i do a full clean on my bathroom. just make sure you wash it with some towels or something like that so that it has something to rub against in the washer...hang up again on the shower rod to dry. i also cut off the seam on the bottom so that it won't hold excess moisture, it just runs into the tub like the water off the walls.

  50. QUESTION:
how do i clean a plastic shower liner?
i have a clear plastic shower liner/curtain and it is getting soap scum and dirty at the bottom. how do i clean this? do i just spray it with cleaner or do i take it out and put it in the washing machine?

    • ANSWER:
Here is how I clean mine.
Set you washer to Full Load, Hot Wash/Warm Rinse.
Put the liner in the washer, and add 1/2 cup bleach.

The hot water (120° - 130°) makes the vinyl soft and supple. The bleach removes the soap scum and dirt. If you do not have a warm rinse stop your washer before rinse begins. Rerun the wash cycle with hot or warm temp, and remove liner when washer attempts to rinse.

Remove liner from washer, and allow it to drain off. Then hang the liner back up, and towel it dry. These liners make your shower curtain (vinyl or fabric) last way longer, and they cost less than half that of a decorative shower curtain.
