Ready Made Curtains

Ready made curtains are generally known as cur 00004000 tains available in certain fixed sizes. Often lined, these drapes are an inexpensive method of dressing your windows. It is critical to mention that ready made curtains offer more thansimply worth, its the quality also. It's no surprise to some of you then to know that during the great recession the window furnishing industry basically saw an increase in sales compared to a crash in almost every other sector. Great department shops are giving up their custom made sections to make extra space for ready made ranges.

I do not need to chat about the irritating problem with these readymades so early, but i would rather get it out of the way so we can debate the lengthy advantages in leisure. Linings at the back of these curtains is a big let down. The front fabric would be a thing of beauty and quality but the lining at the back meant to prevent light from coming through or to give the curtains some weight doesn't do its job in any way. The lining fabric is too thin and lets light through during the day, not so much as much during the night. With the fabric being thin it barely provides the weight required to form attractive flowing even drapes. But thereis a solution. An important choice when buying ready made curtains would be to go with them with thermal blackout linings. We promote these lining with all curtains. They can be employed with all pencil pleat curtains to block all light, provide weight, reduce loss of heat and keep levels of noise down. Use them with your bedroom curtains, childrens curtains ormaybe living room curtains.

  7. QUESTION:
My bay window measures 190ins.Can l buy ready-made curtains wider than 90ins each?

    • ANSWER:
I just made myself a pair of curtains for my bay window. I bought some fabulous curtain material from Dunelm and joined them together (it had a pattern, so I had to buy extra length to match up the pattern on the joins, and so the pattern continued across both curtains).

Make sure you allow for matching, and for a fold over on all four sides of each curtain. it's easy enough to sew the curtain tape on, and it's very cheap at Dunelm.

You'll get much more choice if you make them yourself (and they'll be cheaper); but you can always find someone to run them up for you, once you've chosen the fabric.

If you don't have a Dunelm nearby, try http://www.fabricland.co.uk, which also has a directory of people who will sew for you.

  13. QUESTION:
Is it difficult to add linings to existing ready made curtains? Also can I just add black outlinings alone?
There is a lovely pair of readymade curtains on Ebay that would look great in my bedroom but they aren't lined. Is it really hard to add linings to curtains that have already been made up? I've never sewn before, is it something I could do or would it cost a lot to have a seamstress do them for me. If it is a major task then it won't be worthwhile me buying the curtains. It is just that there are 2 pairs that will fit my windows perfectly.

Also, if I want the curtains to have blackout quality do I need to have normal linings and blackout linings or can you just fit blackout linings.

    Thanks for your help.

    • ANSWER:
If you've never sewn before, it wouldn't be something you'd want to tackle. It's a bit involved to line them yourself.
I don't know what a seamstress would charge to line them for you but, honestly, I don't think they would be worth buying and having them lined.
As for the blackout linings, fit them so you can use them with any curtain.

  16. QUESTION:
correct size curtains? How do you know which size to get?
sorry for being so dumb but i have never done this before! I have measured one of the windows as 61 width and 54 drop, so which size curtains do i buy? For instance when you see ready made curtains in the shop and they have a measurement-is that for one curtain or the pair? Someone told me that you should buy curtains that are double the measurement of the width , is this true? I am so confused! and embarrassed for being so clueless. I hope this question makes sense!

    • ANSWER:
OK, the sizes on the pack are for each curtain. Obviously, if you buy the same width as your window, it's going to look a bit stretched when they're closed, so go for about one and a half times the width. (Twice is usually for nets.)

So, you're going to look for a pair that are each about 45 wide and 54 drop (and make sure you know whether you're dealing in inches or cms!).

And you're not being stupid - we've all been there! Don't be afraid to ask in the shop if necessary, I'm sure they're used to it, and better to be safe than sorry.

  17. QUESTION:
    Curtains 125 inches in length?
I am looking for affordable ready made curtains 125 inches in length for three apartment windows.

I have looked everywhere in stores and online. The length is impossible to find ready made at what I consider an affordable price. I don't want to spend a lot of money, as these curtains are for an apartment.

    Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
Have you tried J C Pennys? It's been a while since I bought drapes or curtains but their selection was always good and if they didn't have the length you needed it could usually be ordered and obtained in a week or two. Their prices were always good also.

  18. QUESTION:
Where can you get cheap curtains & blinds made to measure?
I'm decorating my living room and have a large narrow french door that is 300cm long, meaning that I can't find any ready made curtains long enough for it, so will have to go for made to measure. I also have a smaller window in that room that I want to put a matching roman blind on. I've been looking at shops and the web and the prices are really expensive, also I just want one curtain panel to pull back over the french door to one side, not 2 panels. I don't understand why they are so much!!! Someone must do them at an affordable price. I can't sew myself, does anyone have any ideas what to do? I live in Birmingham, UK

    • ANSWER:
You could easily make some- pop to Ikea, buy a curtain you like, then add an extra panel of fabric on the bottom in a contrasting colour/pattern. Use iron on hemming if you're not a confident sewer, or whizz it up on a machine.

The curtains are normally sold in pairs, so take the second panel to a local machinist (look in buysell/yellow pages maybe) and get them to make it into a blind, or if feeling creative buy a blind kit yourself (places like aberkahn fabric etc sell them) and make it yourself.

I have found sheers this size but I want lace curtains, two panels for one window. I've looked online but what I see are very long panels, 63" and up to 84" long. i need some advice about measuring curtains its my first time buying curtains ?
im going to buy ready made curtains is it 1 curtain i measure or is it the window i measure

    • ANSWER:
measure the window width, then double that to get the correct "fullness" in your window treatments.

you wouldn't want to put one 72" wide curtain panel on a 72" window, it would look like a bed sheet hanging there. two panels would be better. you want to double the fabric so that it looks full and pretty. that wavy drapery look.

  25. QUESTION:
How do I apply a blackout lining to my existing curtains, which are the type which feed through a pole at top?
This is for quite a big window, 96" drop and width 89". I looked into buying blackout blinds to put behind the curtains but it seems my drop is too long for blinds. I also looked at buying ready made black out curtain linings which you hook on the back of existing curtains but it looks like you need the traditional sort of pleated type of curtain to do that.
    Any ideas gratefully received!

    • ANSWER:
You did not say if you sew. If it were me I'd removed the stitches from the top of the curtains and some of the sides a little bit and sew in the blackout material. Since your width is 89" you will first have to sew two widths of fabric together. I used to think blackout lining was black. I was surprised to find out it is white. It will add a lot of weight to your existing curtains.

how do u put voiles on top of curtains?
this probably sounds like a silly question, but i'm wanting to buy some curtain (preferably ready made) and hang some voiles in front of the curtains rather than underneath to give the curtains a silky type of look...is there a way i can hang them up together without sewing as i'm not very good at it...would i need to buy a double pole or something :S :S i seen it done in a shop a while ago on display and forget to check out how they did it grrrr...

    advice would be apreciated..thanks

    • ANSWER:
Go to the fabric or drapery store (I think Walmart would have them too) and get the pinch rings for drapes. Since you do not sew, I would take the rings and pinch them to the curtains together at the tops. Then put the rings on the rod to hang. I would place them about every 6" or so, and if the sheers are fuller then the curtain, then fold the sheers in a little bit and catch the fold in the pinch. Good luck.

  32. QUESTION:
is it possible to make curtains...?
I am decorating a nursery for my baby and have found the perfect ready made pair...except they are too small width wise..is it possible to buy two pairs and have them made into one set of curtains?
the measurements of my window is:
    width-246cm/104in
    drop: 142cm/56in
the pattern is striped..would I still need to put a design in the join or would the stripes be ok?

    • ANSWER:
First of all go back to the store and see if they do the curtains in a wider width - or perhaps they can order them for you. Just about every curtain manufacturer makes curtains in two if not three widths. Now failing this you can get a machinist to sew two pairs together. They will join them by sewing the curtain fabric together and then the lining. You will need new heading tape to go right across the top of each curtain - you can`t join that. You may get lucky and the pattern may match, but , if not, there may be enough fullness that you don`t really see the join. Personally, I would not draw attention to the join by trimming it. Sometimes its worth buying an extra pair if you want any cushions, or a washing bag etc to match.

  33. QUESTION:
Guide for making voile/net curtains? Is there a website?
I want to buy some voile fabric and haven't a clue how to make curtains but want to give it a go so are there any websites to give a step by step guide? Or are there any experienced seamstresses out there to help?! I've found some gorgeous fabric but unfortunately cannot be bought ready made in the shops. I want to make it in one piece to go behind curtains. The window measurements are 70" width and 52" depth. Any advice would be great thanks.

    • ANSWER:
when you are making any curtains it is easier to start with the hem and get that out of the way , measure the length you want it is important to have the curtain straight at the top this will ensure that your curtain will hang evenly allowing 2 inches for the hem at the top and about 3 inches for the bottom hem use a' ball point ' needle and measure twice before you cut ,voile is not the easiest to work with it moves a lot and don't forget to measure the two curtains at the same time write down the measurements so that if you have to leave it you know where you are .You will need very light tape for the voile if your not attaching it to the main curtain ,the amount you will need will depend on the width of the voile the shop will be able to help you with that just tell them the measurements of your window it is most likely you will have a centre seam .good luck and happing sewing .

  35. QUESTION:
Curtain width - how much do I need?
I have seen some ready-made curtains at M&S but I don't know what width I need. I didn't realise but when you pull them to make pleats, the width of the curtain becomes much shorter than what it says on the pack.

So for instance, I have a window that is 300cms and the curtains are 300 cms in total. Yet I probably need curtains much wider than that, otherwise the curtain will just look like a flat sheet on the window, rather than have pleats. So roughly how much extra material do I need for some nice pleats? They do another wider variety which is around 360cms - would this be enough for some pleats or would it still look like a flat sheet?

    Thanks
Thanks for all the answers, very helpful. I'm even thinking of using quite a bit more than double now - hope this won't affect the look!

    • ANSWER:
Whatever the width of the window is, double it, plus add a few extra cm on either side to...you want to make sure they hang a few cm on either side of the window, not directly over the window itself, or you will get light coming in on the sides.

  36. QUESTION:
Living Room Ideas for my new house?
Iv recently moved into a new house and iv got most my furniture in my living room now but i still feel its missing a few vital things. Was thinking a nice rug for middle of living room and also a lightshade and maybe also a lick of paint on a wall or two to brighten the room up a bit but struggling to make a decision.

The carpet in our living room is white and is an ivory colour (very light) and the walls are magnolia which was how the house came when it was completed a few months ago.

Furniture wise we have a sofa and a matching chair which are dark brown leather with oak (coloured) legs. We also ordered another one of these chairs in a White Leather colour to break things up a bit (hopefully wont look silly or ill be selling on ebay)

The rest of the furniture (tv unit/lamp stand/side tables etc) is made of solid real Oak to go with the chair legs.

Decorations/Accessories such as vases/lamp/clock/ornaments are a mixture of Dark Brown/Green/Yellow and a little bit of what id call a sort of green/teal colour.

I also have wide windows/french doors into back garden with these curtains -
    http://www.terrysfabrics.co.uk/prod/ready-made-curtains/eyelet-curtains/zest-ready-made-curtains-teal

They look rather blue on the website but they look different in real life, more like a greeny teal/yellow/green/dark Brown combination. We also have matching cushion covers.

So basically we've got light carpet/walls, dark brown/white seating, oak side furniture and then green/yellow/dark brown/bit of teal decoration. So as you can see we have already got plenty of colour but we're still missing a few things.

Was thinking that a rug might be a good idea but cant decide on a style colour to go with the rest of the stuff i have, im thinking brown might be a bit bland next to the brown sofa and im also thinking that the curtains already have a pattern so im thinking that a patterned rug might clash?? I also cant decide on light shade, whether i go for something brown in colour or light or bright or just something silver like the curtain rail??

Also, ideally id be looking to paint one of the main living room walls at some point in a more interesting colour, possibly the longest wall behind the sofa or the smaller wall which seperates the living room from open stairs which we mount our LED TV on. We havent bought any pictures to put on the wall yet but im guessing we shouldnt stray too far from the colours we already have in the living room.

Any good suggestion to help us along the way are more than welcome :-)

    Thanks

    Matt
In answer to one of the posters questions, we also have bedrooms to finish off but we are not prioritising these right now.

The magnolia on the living room walls is a whiter colour.

Our sofas came from the Karlstad Leather range from Ikea, along with matching headrests. Our oak furniture came from various oak sellers on ebay and the decorational stuff came from various places such as Next, BHS and other websites.

Rug wise Im quite liking something along the lines of the third rug suggestion from Average Joe...not sure who sells it though?

    • ANSWER:
Why don't you try using mydeco.com's 3D room planner you can experiment with different colours, add wallpaper or art to the walls, add furniture to the room, and view the room from different angles. It helped when I was decorating my room and I was able to experiment with colours to see what colours worked well and what colours looked good and it was really easy to use too.

Plan it out using this tool so that you don't make any mistakes and can be sure as to what you want.
You can also use the site to look for rugs or interesting pieces of furniture and art if you need some.

      Hope that helps.

  40. QUESTION:
Hemming curtains for first time sewing project...?
    Hello,
I've just competed my first sewing project - curtains for my son's room. They are tab curtains and made of (believe it or not) denim.
I've followed the instructions to a tee and am now ready to hem. The only instructions are:
Hang curtains and double hem 4".
I know how to do a double hem and am ready to go but I thought I would check with you experts first to see if there are any tips and tricks you would be willing to share.
Also, when I hang the curtains to mark the hem, do I straighten the material out so it is completely flat against the window/wall- they are tab curtains, no pleats - or do I hem them according to the way they will hang with the folds in them. Boy, that's a tough sentence to write, I hope it's clear what I'm trying to say...

    Thank you in advance

    • ANSWER:
After pressing your curtains, hang them the way they will be when finished. Using several straight pins, mark the length. I would then press them at the length line (use spray starch to make the line very noticeable). Then pin up your hem and sew them. Be sure to press the hem when finished.

  42. QUESTION:
How much should I give her?
I want to hang a roman shade in the kitchen. I went to the fabric store to pick out the fabric but the problem is I don't know how to sew and it costs a fortune to have curtains made. A met a girl there that was so nice and offered to make it for me. She just started doing this herself and just made her first roman shade for her house. She really enjoys doing this and said it would be no problem. When I asked how much she will charge she said I don't have to give her anything but I can if I like them. I will drop the supplies and fabric off at her house and she will have them ready for me the next day. I want to pay her but just don't know what is fair. How much should I pay her for her kindness?

    • ANSWER:
Wait until you see the finished product. If she does a good job, offer to tell others about her work and ask if she has some business cards that she could give to you. This is the best way to repay someone who is just starting out and needs to build a client base. Whether the workmanship is up to par or not, you should be prepared to offer a small gift when you pick them up, followed with a simple thank you note by mail. Either way, the gesture of kindness should be rewarded. It's difficult to pay for something like this because you could possibly offend her if the amount isn't what she thinks it it worth.

  43. QUESTION:

Or if you leave it up to a partner to wake you up, how does he/ she feel about alarm clocks?

The bracket weight is too heavy to stay up, and I'm tired of mini blinds. I've made some serious injuries trying to do this in past; the ones up will come down very easily. The screws that go in plastic holes make big holes, but won't stay, sheet rock studs (screws in a covering) don't hold either I'm about ready for Gorilla Glue. Any do it yourselfer's have a correct, less damaging way to hang the brackets without the damage?

    Lesson 10

Make a recording of Fran Drescher saying 'mommy' repeatedly. (Important: no more than a four second delay between each 'mommy'; occasional crescendo to the level of a supersonic jet is required). Play this tape in your car everywhere you go for the next four years. You are now ready to take a long trip with a toddler.

    Lesson 11

Start talking to an adult of your choice. Have someone else continually tug on your skirt hem, shirt- sleeve, or elbow while playing the 'mommy' tape made from Lesson 10 above. You are now ready to have a conversation with an adult while there is a child in the room.

This is all very tongue in cheek; anyone who is parent will say 'it's all worth it!' Share it with your friends, both those who do and don't have kids. I guarantee they'll get a chuckle out of it. Remember

  48. QUESTION:
Another bizarre dream I PROMISE TO CHOOSE BEST ANSWER?
Ok I remember I was walking down an alleyway on a street in like the 1800's with a girl (in a white flowy dress) and a man (in a black robe) walking ahead of me, I was with them. The girl was surrounded by loads of cats they were climbing on her and following her but she didn't mind because I knew that she was a cat. The man didn't know she was but I did.
We went into this room were vampires dressed in white where sitting on white and gold fancy sofas and chairs talking to each other. The room was very dark, there was one big window with a blue decorative frame.
I offered everyone tea (I think I was scared or anxious) my mam called me on my phone and told me I couldn't make tea here because there wasn't the right windows and I said ok. Then I thought oh it doesn't matter so who wants tea? then a little girl in a white dress told me she would ring social services if I did.
Suddenly I was in my Granny's house. I opened the sitting room door, it was dark and the curtains where closed, on the chair beside the window there was a young women I couldn't see her face but she just sat and stared at me, I was really freaked out by this closed to the door then found my self in my Granny's kitchen.
In the kitchen there was a big fat women making coffee from marshmallow desserts that where ready made and lined up in the press. I was really pissed off because I wanted to make tea but she was in my way.
I thought what she was making looked nicer so I made coffee with marshmallows instead but as I was making them she was still in my way.
The vampires where here now in the kitchen at the table and I closed the curtains, but then thought no this room wont do, so I brought them in to the living room and quickly closed the curtains, I realised now that I was a vampire as well.
I went back into the sitting room, opened the door and the girl was still sitting there only her head was slanted but she was still perfectly still, I was very freaked out and said who are you and what are you doing here? she slowly turned her head to face to me then she suddenly was standing in front of me and she said her name was megan (I have a second cousin on my granny's side called megan although I only ever met her once when I was a child) I still couldn't see her face I tried to turn the light on but it wouldn't work and I was really freaked out.
Now I was suddenly in the back of a taxi telling the driver how I met so many weird people that day especially weird women and how scared I was, he looked at me through the mirror and said in a really worried voice yes lots of very weird women.
Then my friend was in the seat beside him and then suddenly we where all on quad bikes driving through a car park of an industrial building where we saw two very small children with knifes and putting on balaclavas the taxi man stopped the boys but they threatened him so he left and we followed but our quad bikes stopped working so we had to run with them under our arm.
As we got further up the carpark we saw loads and loads of young kids and toddlers with knifes. To them it was just a game but they where going to get hurt I was so scarred for them but there was nothing I could do.
We hopped over a wall into this house knocked the door and a women answered the house was pitch black inside and we couldn't see the women I remember having a bad feeling about it then waking up.
Can anyone interpret this? and over the last 2 months iv been having dreams about my granny's house, but my granny is never there its only ever people I don't know in the house.

    • ANSWER:
Hi, I think you are feeling out of touch with Granny. You miss her but you can't reach her for some reason and your subconscious feels it's because of your age. You think growing into a young woman has turned her off to you and you feel like a vampire (the outcast). This is evident in the little girl that threatens you for trying to make tea. I think you are fighting over your affections from Granny, perhaps Megan. It could be simple curiosity over this illusive cousin you've only met once, but it has more meaning in my opinion. Maybe it's her that feels like she is in your shadow and you are getting all of Granny's attention. She's waiting in the dark for her turn. It also seems to me that she has something to tell you, something to confront you about in real life. What could it be?
I think this dream is also symbolic of males VS females. The vampires are males and the Granny, your mom, Megan, the fat woman, and the little girl are the females. You are struggling with an identity crisis. You still want to be a little girl, but you want to hang out with the guys too. You are incorporating both masculine and feminine traits into your personality by bringing the vampires to Granny's.
You want to escape this time in your life, so you take a taxi... You explain to the taxi driver that there are lots of weird women, but in otherwords you're saying, "At heart I'm just a tomboy, take me away from the frilly girly scene." He repeats your statement in worry because he's worried about you. I think this might be your dad trying to rescue you from the vampires.
The car park of an industrial building is his place of work.
The children with knives and your being scared for them is your own maternal instincts.
When the quad bikes stopped working and you had to carry them and run, you are running away from your responsibility as an adult to have and protect children. You do not want that responsibility yet.
In real life, there may be a woman who has bad news for you. Can you remember anything about the color of the house or any location?

Physically (or scientifically) I think dreams where you have many interchanging themes represents fatigue and a possible weather change that our bodies are trying to get used to.

Psychologically (emotionally) I sense by your dream that you are waiting for life to throw challenges and adventure your way.

  49. QUESTION:
Is this story I made good?
    BRIANA AND THE FAERIES

It was a beautiful October day. The sky was blue and dotted with silvery clouds. The air was cool, crisp and breezy. Briana rushed to the front window and peeked through the curtains. It had been raining for two days and she hadn't been able to go out and play. Excitedly she called out, "Momma, can I go outside today? Come and look! The rain has stopped and it's such a pretty day"

Briana's mother lifted baby Isabelle up from her cradle and walked over to the window. Smiling at her daughter she said, "Yes, Briana, you can go outside for a little while, but you have to put your jacket on. If it starts getting colder, you'll have to come back inside. Your Aunt Rachel is out in the garden, so stay close by where she can keep an eye on you."

Briana skipped happily to her room, put on her favorite purple jacket and ran out the front door. The first place she went was to her swing set. She climbed up onto the slide. The metal was very cold and Briana shivered when she sat down. After a few times of climbing the ladder and going down the slide, she walked over to the swings. Her favorite was the blue one with yellow flowers painted on the seat. It went much higher than the green swing. Her daddy had been teaching her how to "pump" her legs so that the swing could go higher and higher. She soon felt as if she was flying. Up to the treetops the swing took her, until it seemed she could almost touch the sky.

After a while, Briana's legs began to grow tired. The swing had reached its highest point and she was ready to play another game. She slowed the swing down by letting her legs dangle off the front of it. When the swing had dropped low enough, she jumped off into the soft beige sand that covered the ground below.

Briana landed on her feet and steadied herself. She heard a woodpecker tapping softly in the distance. She glanced up into the trees. It was autumn and the leaves were turning from their summer green to vivid shades of orange, red and gold. Suddenly, Briana noticed a quick flicker of light. At first she thought it was a ray of sunshine peaking through the tree branches, but she looked again and saw two flickers of light -- one from each side of the tree.

With a puzzled look on her face, she slowly walked over to the oak tree and laid down on the soft grass beneath. The wind was blowing lightly through the branches making a faint whistling sound. As she watched a squirrel run along a branch, Briana saw another flicker of light, and then another -- but they were all coming from different places in the tree. They looked like fireflys, but that couldn't be. Fireflys are only one color and these light flashes were three different colors.

Briana glanced toward the bottom of the oak tree and noticed a small hole. It looked as if it were going straight down into the ground. Her grandmother had read a story to her about tiny enchanted caverns that exist on the inside of hollow trees. These caverns were said to be the home of the faeries. Briana loved to hear faerie stories -- tales about small feathery-light creatures ... tiny beings who spent their time fluttering among the flowers and dancing in the trees. Sometimes, in the glow of a full moon, they had been seen standing tiptoe on windowsills sneaking glances through open windows. She had never actually seen a faery, but Briana was always on the lookout for one.

As her curiosity grew, she decided to get a closer look at that hole in the tree. Briana got up onto her hands and knees and crawled over to take a peek. As she peered down inside, she saw dozens of little light flashes flickering on and off. All of the sudden, one of the lights came rushing towards her. Startled, she jumped away and landed on her back. Whoosh ... a flash whizzed out and flew up into the branches. Then came another and another. Five lights soon were buzzing around the tree limbs. Two were purple in color, one yellow and the other two were a brilliant red.

Briana closed her eyes tightly, rubbed them with her hands, and slowly opened them back up. Keeping her hands over her eyes, she squinted and peeked out through spaces between her fingers. She thought she was imagining things, but there they were. She was actually seeing five different colored flashing lights dancing in the trees. In an instant, one of the lights stopped buzzing and stayed in place, but it was still floating in the air. The yellow light inched little by little towards her. When it was just a few inches from her face, Briana realized the light was a living being with a tiny little face and body and delicate white wings. "It's a faery!", Briana thought to herself. "It's a real live faery."

The yellow faery signaled to the others to join her. They hovered around Briana's head, looking at her as curiously as she was looking at them. The faery's didn't speak. The only sound that could be heard was the faint beating of their wings. Then, quick as a wink, they all fl
