Sheer Curtains

If you want privacy in your room without blocking the light out, a net or sheer curtain is just want you need. The most interesting thing about sheer curtains is that things outside the room can be seen from inside but things inside the room cannot be seen from outside. This is why these articles are also called privacy drapes.

Apart from providing privacy, these drapes also fill the room with a translucent glow that creates a magical atmosphere. With the changing seasons, the direction of the sun rays that enter your room will change, so the way your room is illuminated during the day will naturally but dramatically change.

Unlike other drapes, sheer curtain flutter in the breeze and let it in. This also brings a sense of openness to the room. Most sheer curtains provide adequate UV protection too. Sometimes it may be necessary to have double layers in a sheer drape to ensure that it falls in a stately manner.

Most people think that these draperies are made of only cotton. However, this is not true. These drapes are made from a variety of materials. Cotton silk draperies with Italian designs can transform your room into a place fit for fairies. You may recreate the luxurious aura of imperial antechambers by wrapping your windows with iridescent organza silk sheer curtains.

If you like more contemporary designs, you may choose the gorgeous plaid sheers or the ones designed by professionals. If you do not choose a drape that suits your room, people will invariably notice the discrepancy.

When used along with other curtains, they provide just the right background for the heavier drapes. Some people like to keep their heavier draperies tied up and use the sheer curtains to keep the extra sunlight out. This creates the illusion of an open window.

It is not very difficult to maintain sheer curtains if they are made of cotton. All you need to do is soak them in warm soap water for a night and rinse them thoroughly. You must not soak them for more than twelve hours at one time. If you are using silk sheer curtains you will have to have them dry-cleaned.

Although these draperies look so elegant, they are not very expensive. If you buy them from suppliers who sell through the internet, you may be able to decorate your room without actually spending a fortune.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How can I hem sheer curtains without it looking all bunched up at the bottom?
Looking to hem the sheer curtains I replaced for my kitchen window, but since I live in a mobile home, the window size is difficult to find without making alterations to the curtains. I need to hem the curtains approximately 7 inches. I don't personally own a sewing machine, but tried heming them with a coworker's sewing machine, only to have them gather/pucker. Now what?

    • ANSWER:
hot glue gun! Cut off all but 1.5 inches of extra curtains. Use a hot glue gun to hem them with no sewing, hence a seamless hem.

  2. QUESTION:
How can I make my sheer curtains opaque?
I recently moved into a house and the previous owner left some nice curtains in all the rooms. I like them but they are sheer and lets in a lot of sunlight during the day. Anybody know any solutions how I can make these opaque without spolining their appearence. Are there any curtian liners for curtians in living rooms/bedrooms?

    • ANSWER:
A really good idea is to line them with fabric called Temptrol. This will block out light and heat. You'd be suprised how much heat is gained and lost through the windows. Sew it with the white side facing the curtains you already have, and the foil side facing out. This material runs less than .50 a yard. I'll include links to a couple sites that sell it.

  3. QUESTION:
Do sheer curtains in the living room look cheap?
I love sheer curtains and I'd like to put some sheers in my living room and tie them on the side. Does sheer look cheap? Do I have to use solid if I want it to look nice?

    • ANSWER:
Typically a sheer is paired with solid thicker end drapes. The end drapes can be just a panel on each side. Putting in just the sheers works for the summer months but they should be coupled with a room darkening blind. It all depends on your decor and preference.

Back when windows were not double and triple pane the set up was blinds attached to the casing then sheers on a pole or traverse rod then drapes that spanned the window topped with a cornice that held a valance. These days window coverings are more for privacy and form rather then functionality. Room darkening coverings are good way to protect your furnishings, fabrics, and even hardwood floors from ultra violet damage and save on the cooling/heating bills. Combos of blinds, shutters, and UV vinyl window covering with your sheers - even in the most formal traditional settings are a good way to achieve this.

So to answer your question...No it does not make the room look cheap. However, without a second integrated option for UV protection and light transfer you have missed an oppertunity. End drapes, full drapes and toppers can work to enhance the total decor.

  4. QUESTION:
What color sheer curtains should I get?
I have all white bedding, the walls are apartment white, and the carpet is typical brown. I don't like brown for the curtains and whatever color I choose will match a throw blanket on the bed probably and I may add a red cushion. I was thinking of an eggplant sheer fabric but I haven't been able to find it. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
      White.

Then have a blast with a window scarf above it and a matching throw. This way when you get bored of it whoosh it's gone and you can do something else for a different season.

  5. QUESTION:
How do I clean sheer white pinched curtains?
I have a dog who loves to look out our front window and she pushes the sheer curtains aside with her head. Well, I noticed the other day the area she pushes is looking dingy/brownish. What's the best way to clean the curtains? They are sheer with the "pinched" look. I don't exactly how to describe it. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Do the curtains have a Care Tag? If so, wash the curtains according to the Care Tag.

If the curtains do not have any Care Tag, I would take them to a dry cleaner. You might be able to wash them in your washer, but you would be taking a gamble.

If you decide to take the gamble anyway, use the Warm water setting on your machine and your regular detergent, but add a scoop or two of Oxi Clean™. Dry the curtains in your dryer, but only for about 10 minutes. Then hang damp.

  11. QUESTION:
    Sheer curtains in bay area?
    Hi,

I am looking for sheer curtains and can find only drab colors like white, brown, cream. I am looking for bright colors of yellow, red, orange in range of 10-15$. I have searched high and low in Target, LNT, BBB and JCPenny.

Yes! I am planning to buy material and sew some off on my own but until then....Thought some of you may have some tips/ideas on other stores..

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Well looking in local department stores is not going to give you lots of options in fabrics.

Your local curtain store should have an extensive range of fabric samples.

Why don't you look in the phone book for the Local "independent" curtain shops not the big brand companies.

The Local curtain shop will have heaps of "samples".

You can choose from pattern sheers or plain sheers in a wide range of colourings.

I wouldn't shop in a local department store, as they tend to stay with their own "brand" while a local curtain shop is going to have "all" of the fabric companies in their selections.

You can then order the amount of fabric you need in. (normally takes 2-10 working days if it's in stock).

  12. QUESTION:
Can anyone tell me where I can find sheer curtains?

  13. QUESTION:
Shouldn't the blower on my furnace have enough force to move my sheer curtains?
I have a modular home. When my furnace blower kicks on, the heat blows from the registers on the side of the house that the furnace is on. On the other side, however, the heat just seems to rise on its own. My curtains don't even move. Any ideas as to the problem?
Also noticed that the flue pipe has black soot on it.

    • ANSWER:
Blower could be old, furnace filter could be ready to change or never changed and totally clogged with with dirt (would greatly decrease air flow).

If you think there is a problem with the furnace, have a qualified heating/cooling person check it out.

  16. QUESTION:
Do sheer curtains cut off sunlight?
I want to have sheers in my room, but if I have my bed nearby, I don't want sunlight to fade it out. Would the sheers cut sunlight off enough to stop it fading?

    • ANSWER:
Yes they will scatter the light enough, but since you are worried about it you could also do this and make it look nicer too. First of all, don't go skimpy on the curtains, don't hang one sheer up for the entire one side of the rod, hang at least 2 panels, second hang a double rod and double the layers put a white sheer on the first layer closest to the window and then put a darker or a different color sheer on the outside rod, so you have a layered look plus double protection should you choose to close both! Hope this helps!

  17. QUESTION:
Is peachskin fabric considered sheer ie; for sheer curtains?
I'm shopping online for sheer window panels. On a website under the "sheers" category the description says "peachskin fabric". While they are a white color I'm not sure if they are sheer enough to see through.

Generally speaking, no. Descriptions like that are just so vague and there is no single authority to say just what these things mean.

  18. QUESTION:
    How to wash sheer curtains?
I put a sheer curtain in the washing machine along with the drapes on Permanent Press cycle and it acted like a lint trap - there were globs of lint all over it. What did I do wrong and what can I do now?

    • ANSWER:
I don't think it will be an easy job to remove lint from sheers. You could perhaps try a cold tumble in the dryer. They may be damaged beyond repair. When you replace them remember never to wash sheers in the washer. Take them down, fold neatly in a shape to fit your sink. Fill sink with hot water and biological powder/liquid. Carefully place sheers into sink and allow to soak until water is cold. Remove plug lift sheers carefully not disturbing them and refill sink with fresh water. Rinse the sheers again without unfolding. Repeat this until the water runs clear. Place sheers in clean bucket and put carefully in washer and spin on a slow spin speed. Take out immediately and rehang while still damp. They will not require ironing.

  19. QUESTION:
    About cleaning sheer curtains?
I have ivory Lucerne sheers (JCPenney) on windows that are oak-trimmed. When it rained the sill leaked and the sheers got wet, but when dried I noticed they looked like they absorbed a stain from the wood trim. Can this be removed? Do sheers have to be drycleaned or can I hand wash?

    • ANSWER:
You can try to rewash the curtains on the gentle cycle with a very small bit of bleach. I don't dry my sheers in the dryer. I hang them up damp and they dry on there own without any wrinkles.
      Good luck!!!

    How to dye sheer curtains?
I have off white sheers that I bought a while ago, but they look too boring now. I'd like to dye them a bit darker like a light brown or something. I don't have the money to go out and buy some because we have a lot of windows in our living room. So I was wondering if there was a cheaper way to just dye them permanently? The good thing is they are already like a tan color, so its a good base.
they are polyester by the way

    • ANSWER:
Polyester is hard to dye. In my textile classes we learned the dyes actually require heated water and are very toxic if you can even find them.

I would buy a yard of polyester sheer and try using a dye like RIT just to see how it works. I would worry that the dye would not bond with the polyester and forever rub off onto other surfaces. RIT's website says it will NOT work on 100% polyester.

Sheers can be washed in the gentle cycle. You might find that just cleaning them will give them some new life.

  46. QUESTION:
What is the best way to keep my kitten from climbing up my curtains and surfing my tables?
My kitten is 10 weeks old and he is driving me crazy. He climbs up my sheer curtains and peruses around on my dining room, coffee and end tables. I refuse to have him declawed due to the horrible possible outcome. I know he's only playing and he has a cat scratching post, but he's ruining my curtains. What else can I do?

    • ANSWER:
How well I remember one of our present 2 cats as a kitten, he used to love running up the curtains but you know, kittens do grow up very quickly and it's not the end of the world to have to buy new curtains.
I'm really glad you know how cruel declawing is, as claws are very important to the health of cats, they need them for everything they do,especially for exercising their leg, shoulder and back muscles, that's why many declawed cats develop arthritis. You need a good tall strong scratching post, preferably with a platform on top and some catnip toys. You say he has a scratching post, but have you shown him how to use it ? Drag your own nails down while he watches, then gently lift his front paws up,so he has a go. When he runs up the curtains, don't say a word, lift him to his scratching post, pop him on the platform and praise him. Cats just love to be up heights. When he jumps on tables, lift him off and throw him a toy, when he chases it, praise him.Cats are very intelligent, they soon learn what earns them praise. You should never ever punish a kitten or a cat, they don't understand punishment and just become nervous of you. Some people 'advise' squirting water, that is pointless and unkind.
Kittens grow up very quickly, enjoy him being a kitten, relax and let him have fun within reason.

  48. QUESTION:
How can I make cheap sheer curtains ?
I have two huge (12 feet long) sliding glass doors in my new house, one on either end of the living/dining room. I need to cover them, but I'd like to let light in. The previous owners left nice hardware for curtains with drapery hooks, but I think I can use rings with those little clips on them. I can hook the clips to panels of fabric. But how/where do I get really cheap sheers? Okay, inexpensive. Can I buy the fabric?

Would it be cheaper to get shower curtains? I think they'd be too short. Bed sheets? Any ideas? I don't really have time to sew a bunch of curtains before we move in. It's not like I'm going to have a bunch of money to spend on this in a couple of months, so they do have to last a little while. And I don't want it to look horrible.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
It is cheaper to buy them already made than to buy the fabric if you go to places like Walmart,Kmart,Ross,Target ect. I think Kmart is the cheapest I have seen them in there like 5.99 each sometimes.

  49. QUESTION:
Is Linen Scrim fabric okay to use for curtains?
I'd like to make rustic looking sheer curtains for our bedroom - could I use linen scrim fabric? Will it be strong enough to use as curtains?

    • ANSWER:
It will be fine to use. Buy extra, stitch across the cut end and then lightly prewash as you will after the curtains are sewn....very short cycle, just to wet and rinse.

Also, remove the selvage edges (longest side/uncut by store) after washing and before sewing.

Both procedures will help to avoid shrinking and distortion.

  50. QUESTION:
What color of curtains should I buy?

    • ANSWER:
